This past Sunday Pastor Dennis recounted the story Jesus told about two men who died, one went to Abraham’s bosom and the other went to hell. The one that went to hell had done nothing with his money to help the beggar at his gate. We want to use our money to make friends for ourselves so that we will see those friends when we get to heaven.

The Darjeeling Project & Missions Offering

Luke 16:9  And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of the wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they will receive you into the eternal dwellings.

– Our goal is to raise $200,000 in the next 6 months to build a training center to house the Bible school in Darjeeling, India.

– On May 22nd, we will take up our missions offering for our short term teams and also the seed money for this project. We will take up pledge cards that day that span the next 6 months so that we can transfer the money for construction in the fall.

The Vision is to foster a significant influence thru Freedom Fellowship in soul winning and church planting in the 10/40 window.

The Plan is to do this through partnering with India Gospel Outreach in Darjeeling, a thoroughly vetted organization, that has planted over 4,000 churches and 10 training centers in India; we have had a 25 year partnership with them.

Proverbs 11:30  He who is wise wins souls.

This is going to require all of us to give sacrificially and with an understanding of the eternal consequences of what we are doing.

Luke 16 is a template for us, a lens to look through as we prepare to give.

Luke 16:19-22  Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day. And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores, and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.

This is not a traditional parable since names are mentioned as if this actually took place.

Death finally visited both:
– The poor man was “carried away to Abraham’s bosom,” a place of rest and waiting.
– “The rich man died and was buried.”

The rich man was buried in a fine tomb with lots of mourners.
But then the payday –
– The sin was not being rich.
– The horrible offense was not that he kicked poor Lazarus when he passed.

The sin was that he did nothing. He did not refuse Lazarus because he didn’t ever recognize he was even there.

Heaven and hell are real. In this passage, Jesus was telling all what it was like before His resurrection.

Old Testament:
– no prayers for salvation
– no asking Jesus to redeem
– no Messiah to trust for forgiveness
– no great commission

And here is the result –
– Poor Lazarus is waiting for Jesus to take him to heaven.
– The rich man, who ignores and neglects to use his wealth and status to lift up a single soul while here on earth, is now eternally regretful and tormented.

The rich man is there because he did not “make friends” with his money and instead squandered it on self indulgence.

These two weeks will be about giving through two mutually important methods:
– Next week, we will pray.
– The following week, we will give our money.

What is described in Luke 16 is two men who reach their destiny, one in heaven and one in hell.
God wishes for no man to perish but for all to secure eternal life.

The Greek word for “destiny” is “horizo” which is where we get our word horizon. It is the place where we see the sky and the land meet.

Our destiny is the God ordained horizon that God has set, that horizo is the boundary marker.

Jeremiah 29:11  For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.

Ezekiel 18:23  Do I have any pleasure in the death of the wicked,” declares the Lord God, “rather than that he should turn from his ways and live?

2 Peter 3:9  …but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

Intercession involves the meeting place between heaven and earth.

When the disciples asked to be taught how to pray:
Matt. 6:10  Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.

When heaven and earth meet in a person’s life, “let your will prevail.”

The Hebrew word for “intercession” is “paga” meaning a meeting or to meet with.

The purpose of intercession is to create meeting between heaven and earth, between God and man, between the Savior and the unsaved.

In intercessory prayer we place ourselves between another person and God as the reconciling link, between the living and the dead.

Moses sent Aaron between the plague and the people with the censer to stop the plague.
Numbers 16:48   He took his stand between the dead and the living, so that the plague was checked.

Everything changes when people meet with God.

Closing

Intercession is God’s plan to change the horizon, the destiny, of lives that are lost. And you and I are commissioned by Jesus to pray.

Intercession – Meeting with God – Coming boldly into the throne of grace.
