This past Sunday Pastor Dennis reminisced about loving to quit playing golf. Now that his grandson Carson is playing and playing well, he has decided to begin again. Just like before, he is unable to master the key to hitting a golfball. What is the key? “The Sweet Spot” Every sport has a sweet spot and every athlete strives to find that spot and to perfect it.
Because finding the sweet spot is the key to winning the game. And winning, contrary to today’s culture, is the goal of life.
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
Over the past 3 years we have grown significantly in our congregation’s size, leadership team’s size, increased staff, and increased our outreach into the community.
Now it is time to significantly release our influence into missions.
Now is the time:
– to run with a specific goal in mind
– to run with a view of eternal rewards
– to run with discipline
In other words, to hit the sweet spot.
The Big Picture – The 10/40 Window
– area is where 2/3 of the world’s population lives
– 90% are unevangelized
– 85% of the poorest of the poor live
India is right in the middle of this window. This is the place that the Lord has drawn us to over the past 25 years.
Darjeeling: located in the northeast part of India, above Calcutta, by Nepal and west of Bangladesh.
In Darjeeling, is the Darjeeling Bible Training Center, now in its 8th year of training pastors, evangelists, and church planters.
Specific Goals for Today: Raise the money to build a training center for the Darjeeling Bible Training Center. $200,000 to begin construction that can house the center and the students.
On May 22, we will take up our annual missions offering for our teams this summer, but we will also take up the money for this project. There will be pledge cards for 6 months so that in the fall, we will transfer the money to the project for construction.
Why raise money for something we will never see?
Read Luke 16
– A thief is robbing his employer.
– He devises a plan to have a place to go when he is fired.
– He cuts what is owed to his master to “make friends” with those who might feed or house him afterwards.
– The owner finds out and is impressed with his ingenuity.
Listen to Jesus’ words:
Luke 16:8 And his master praised the unrighteous manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the sons of this age are more shrewd in relation to their own kind than the sons of light.
He observes that the works are wiser.
Luke 16:9 And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of the wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they will receive you into the eternal dwellings.
We are not to make friends of money. But we are to use these resources of this world to “make friends.” We are using our resources to bring souls into the kingdom. My money needs to be invested into eternal investments, and that means winning souls.
And the best way to win souls is to hit the sweet spot.
