This past Sunday we began in Daniel 9 looking at the prayer of Daniel when he read in Jeremiah that the captivity would be for 70 years. When he “understood,” his response was to pray.

Opening Scripture

Read Daniel 9

Many people today are aware of the signs of the times. The question is this: What is to be our response? It is to pray.

The Lord is calling His church to stand in the gap between Heaven and earth.

Ezekiel 22:30  I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one.

Our battle is not for political agendas, regimes, or for economical markets. We are in a battle for souls. Will you stand in the gap?

Ezekiel 22:17-18  And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, the house of Israel has become dross to Me; all of them are bronze and tin and iron and lead in the furnace; they are the dross of silver.

This is a portrait of what the nation of Israel was like. Dross is the worthless metal that must be discarded when the metal is being purified.

This is how God brings about justice. Matthew 5:45  So that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

So in the day when things are heating up, God’s intentions are clear:
– He is preparing us to stand in the gap.
– Our battle is not political or economic, it is a battle for souls.

Rejoice as the heat comes. He is fulfilling His promise to fashion us as saints in His kingdom.

Job 23:10 But He knows the way I take; When He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

4 Deadly Hindrances to Prayer

1) Unconfessed Sin
Unconfessed sin is often called an opinion, a weakness, not that big a deal, “freedom,” but in reality it is a cancer, a demonic stronghold, a destruction.

The good news is that heartfelt and sincere confession moves the heart of God to forgiveness.

Psalm 66:18  If I regard wickedness in my heart, The Lord will not hear;

2) Unconfessed Wrongs Towards Others

Matthew 5:23-24  Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.

Confession means saying, “Father, you are right and I am wrong.”

Men, the tender care you are commanded to give to your wives is particularly noted in 1 Peter 3:7,  You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

3) Lifestyle of Fear

Matthew 25:25  And I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.

Fear is the opposite of faith.

4) An Unsurrendered Life

John 15:7  If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
Matthew 16:24  Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.”

Giving up idols! Ezekiel 14:3  “Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts and have put right before their faces the stumbling block of their iniquity. Should I be consulted by them at all?

Discussion Questions:

– What is your tendency when trials come?
– What are some ways to turn this around?
– Is there anything from the list that may have caused a hindrance in your prayer life?
