A Simple Understanding of the Holy Spirit and His Baptism

In Galatians 3:3, Paul asks, “Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?” The flesh that Paul is referring to in this passage is religious legalism. In other words,
he was speaking to the human tendency that adds to grace and suggests that our hard
work is what is really necessary to walk with Jesus. Legalism can be so subtle and deceptive! As important as it is to live a disciplined lifestyle and to work hard at self-improvement, the tendency of the human heart is always towards self-sufficiency which is the gateway to legalism. Paul is stating to the church through history, “Having begun in the Spirit are you now ending with the flesh? Having been born by the Holy Spirit of God, are you now returning to the dead religious works to gain favor with God?
